John's uncle is robbed and attacked by the Doones and John decides that the right way for justice is to go to the Law. However his meeting with Colonel Harding proves futile and John's uncle is just ridiculed and mocked for simply losing his things in the fog. Colonel Harding's power and love for delivering his 'justice' is wonderfully portrayed in the song
'Stand up' performed by Richard Waterhouse.

John realises that he must take 'justice' into his own hands when it comes to the Doones. But his upbringing and faith challenges him.
In church, John is pained by his dilemma of 'loving his enemy' and trusting God when all around is such evil being allowed by the Doones. The song 'Make me angry' is performed by Llewellyn and features Lorna overhearing John's pain at the end of the song and praying...."let there be love" instead of what can only be misery and suffering.

Lorna realises that she must end their relationship and begs John to never see her again. In a beautiful duet 'Our secret place' performed by Juliana and Llewellyn, Lorna tells John that if he really loves her then he'll agree to never see her again.

Sir Ensor Doone dies and Carver Doone becomes head of the Doone family. He wishes to marry Lorna immediately and John decides that he must take Lorna away that night. John tells his mother that he is in love with a Doone and that he is going to bring her back home. His mother is horrified and recounts to John the story about the Doones killing his father and how he has now shamed their family name. Lizzie Lewendon portrays John's mother and performs the song 'Shame the name' with great passion.

John's mother is also shocked to discover that her daughter Annie wants to marry Tom Faggus, renowned as being a famous highwayman ! Mother hopes that maybe John and Lorna's love will put an end to the feuding and so gives her children her blessing.

John ventures into Doone valley and steals away Lorna and brings her back home to the Ridd farmhouse. The Doones are furious and attack the farmhouse with guns and fire. With the help of Tom Faggus, John and his family fight off the Doones and keep Lorna. But Lorna is so devastated by the violence that her love for John has caused, that she decides she must go away.

Tom Faggus, being a Highwayman, notices a necklace that Lorna is wearing and says that it belongs to a very rich family with Royal connections. Lorna says that the necklace belonged to her mother and that she has worn it all her life. Lorna decides to leave and goes off in search of her real family that Faggus has now discovered.

John is furious that Faggus wont reveal to him the whereabouts of Lorna. At the wedding of Annie and Tom Faggus portrayed in the lively song 'I will' , John is still angry and forces Faggus to tell him where Lorna has gone. John sets off to find Lorna and is followed by Carver Doone who has also been determined to find out the whereabouts of Lorna. In the powerfully dramatic song 'Move one inch' Carver confronts and warns John Ridd at an old traveller’s tavern. John swears that he'll find Lorna and marry her....continue
